This is a pocket-size, hand-held battery-operated non-contact instrument designed to provide a quick, safe, and simple check for the presence or absence of AC voltage in an electrical line without the necessity of physical access or contact with the conductor. 

This device will enable the detection of a break in any normal, non shielded, 'live' electric cable or wire.  It is suitable for use with AC voltages from about 100V to 10KV.  It is possible to approximately gauge the voltage level from the distance between the detector and the wire at which the indicator LED lights.
